Bariatric surgery is considered as one of the most useful treatments for weight loss for obese individuals. It consists of changing the digestive system by limiting how much food one can eat and absorb. For obese individuals who are not able to lose weight by dieting and exercise, this treatment is highly recommended.

Having been a bariatric surgeon for over 25 years, I have encountered many patients having several myths regarding bariatric surgery. As such, the article “7 Bariatric Surgery Myths Busted” greatly resonated with me. As the title suggests, this article clears up some common misconceptions people have regarding bariatric surgery.

The 7 common myths regarding bariatric surgery are -

1.Bariatric surgery is the “easy way out.”

People tend to assume that having this surgery is an easy escape from obesity. However, this is not the case. There is a lot of effort and hardwork pre and post surgery for a sustained and postive result.

“Once you have committed to bariatric surgery, you will spend about six months learning about healthy living, attending pre-operative classes and undergoing consultation before you surgery. After the procedure, you must stick to a healthy diet and lifestyle, including exercise.”

2.Bariatric surgery is dangerous

Any and every surgery has consequences and risks associated with them. Post bariatric surgery, some may suffer from malabsorbtion. This is a condition where the body cannot absorb the nutrients from the food. However this is a very rare condition, and can be prevented by dietary supplements

3.It is better to lose weight with diet and exercise

Many people can lose weight by dieting and exercise, however the weight-loss is not long term.

“Bariatric surgery helps you not only lose weight, but keep it off. In cases of severe obesity, bariatric (weight loss) surgery, not diet and exercise, can help achie long-term weight control.”

4.Bariatric surgery is for everyone

“Typically, physical, psychological and lifestyle evaluations will be done to determine if you are a good candidate for bariatric surgery before a program will accept you as a patient.”

There are certain requirements which have to be met to go forward with the surgery. Usually people with worsening health conditions which prevents them to lose weight via dieting and exercise are recommended for bariatric surgery.

5. I will see results right away

The weight loss is not immediate and results will not be seen right away. It will take approximately three to six months post surgery to see results.

6.I will never be able to eat normal food again

“Right after bariatric surgery, your diet will be limited to liquids and soft or pureed food as you recover.”

Although ones diet will change post surgery, it does not mean that one cannot eat normal food again. Many people find success with smaller, frequent meals rather than three big meals a day. Bariatric surgery emphasizes on portion control. This means food you like to eat can be incorporated in your diet, as long as its in moderation.

7.Bariatric surgery will fix all of my other health problems.

The surgery is not a cure to all other health problems.

“Many people have healthy body weight and still have conditions like high blood pressure. However, because obesity makes medical problems worse, bariatric surgery can help people better manage diseases and may eliminate them over time.”
