Unconscious bias — exists in schools, in the workplace, and everywhere else. It affects every aspect of our being — the decisions we make, the behaviors we display, and the people we surround ourselves with. When such unconscious bias has a negative impact on our lives or those around us — it is crucial to force them into the conscious and alter them altogether. Digital Training Solutions leverages technology to do just that.
We are in conversation with Kobie Hatcher — a solutions-oriented disruptor. Kobie married his two passions — DEI and technology — to create DTS — a tool to disrupt bias and close gaps.
We talk a lot about unconscious bias. You came up with a program to actually solve for that bias, the Digital Training Solution (DTS). How does that work and how can we use DTS to actually close various gaps?
“Unfortunately, our brains are wired to function along the lines of some form of unconscious bias. It is a mechanism that allows us to make faster decisions in some cases, but in a social setting can have a negative impact. With all of the reinforced media imagery and stereotypes we have seen — our brain begins accepting those as fact and hence processes them when making decisions — leading to unconscious bias.
“Digital Training Solutions essentially uses repetitive resets. For example, we all get hit with targeted ads every single day. Sometimes they can be so subtle that we don’t consciously think about them, but our brains register them. Using that phenomenon, DTS comes to you with repetitive learning in small doses. We help you recognize when bias might be creeping in. When that unconscious bias becomes conscious, you can do something about it and alter your thinking or behavior.
“We provide tools and language for organizations and help people use the right vocabulary so that their unconscious bias never makes another feel uncomfortable — and of course, we leverage technology to make all this possible.
“What separates us from other brands is our digital expertise. Our diverse team of DEI experts, software engineers, and project managers apply their unique perspectives to areas that can facilitate or prevent equity while using a data-centered approach that pushes organizations to continue growing their culture from within. Our online diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) training is designed with adult learning best practices, cyborg anthropology, and neuroscience considerations in mind. For both public and private sector companies, our web-based learning experience and facilitated training have proven effective, relevant, and cost-effective.”
Thanks for sharing, Kobie.
