As leaders, we are often trained to pursue external markers of success — advanced degrees, strategic frameworks, market knowledge. Yet, as I shared recently on Courage to Advance with host Kim Bohr, I’ve seen time and again that what truly sets exceptional leaders apart isn’t another credential. It’s self-awareness.

Self-awareness is more than simply “knowing yourself.” In the conversation, I defined mindfulness as a “lucid awareness that arises from paying attention on purpose in the present moment, in an open and curious way.” That quality of presence changes everything about how we lead.

Why does it matter? Because leadership is contagious. Our stress, our mood, our focus — or lack of it — ripples outward into our teams and organizations. If we are reactive and distracted, that energy becomes the culture. If we are grounded and intentional, we create an environment where others feel safe, creative, and motivated.

One of the simplest but most transformative practices is pausing to notice your body. Try this in your next meeting: feel your feet on the floor. Thi tiny shift interrupts anxiety cycles and creates a space to respond rather than react. Leaders I’ve worked with are often surprised at how much calmer and more focused they feel with such a simple grounding tool.

And here’s the real return on investment: recent research shows that just 10 minutes of daily mindfulness practice can increase self-awareness by 35% in as little as 6–8 weeks. Compare that to the years (and tuition) required for an MBA — and consider which might actually improve how you show up every single day.

This series of articles will explore the highlights of my conversation with Kim Bohr, diving into the tools, research, and real-world applications of mindful leadership. In this first piece, we’ve looked at why self-awareness is the cornerstone. In the next, we’ll address one of the biggest hidden forces undermining organizations today: stress contagion.
