In the face of the global climate crisis, the energy industry stands at a pivotal crossroads. As I reflect on my journey in the sector, it’s clear that driving meaningful change requires more than technological innovation; it demands bold leadership rooted in curiosity, inclusivity, and being a change catalyst with a steadfast commitment to growth — both personal and collective.

For me, the leadership required in today’s energy transition begins with a deep-seated curiosity. The energy landscape is evolving, and the questions we ask now will shape the solutions we create for decades to come. I’ve always believed that leaders must remain students of their industry, engaging with new perspectives and exploring unfamiliar terrain. My curiosity was sparked early in my career during my time at Brown University, where my honors thesis examined the economic phenomenon known as “Dutch Disease.” Growing up in Nigeria, I had always wondered why resource-rich countries often struggled to create value for their citizens, leading to persistent poverty despite their wealth. Through my research, I delved into how resource dependency can crowd out other industries and constrain economic diversification. This exploration not only satisfied my intellectual curiosity but also fueled my passion for the energy sector, inspiring me to ask critical questions and commit to making a positive impact. That early foundation of curiosity paved the way for my career and continues to drive me to seek innovative solutions to today’s energy challenges.

Equally important is fostering inclusivity. Energy transition is not a single-company challenge — it’s a global one, requiring input from diverse industries, governments, and communities. Through partnerships at Microsoft and beyond, I’ve seen the power of collective expertise in action. Inclusivity isn’t just about bringing voices to the table; it’s about ensuring every voice is heard and valued. One example that exemplifies this is the Northern Lights project in Norway. Sponsored by the Norwegian government, this initiative aims to decarbonize the cement industry while creating carbon offsets. Microsoft serves as the technology partner, collaborating with three key energy operators and a broad array of other companies in the partner ecosystem. This diversity of thought and expertise has been instrumental in the project’s success, proving that sustainable solutions are best achieved through collaboration. Projects like this remind me that inclusivity is not just a principle but a practical necessity for solving the complex challenges of energy transition.

Big-picture thinking is another hallmark of leadership in energy transition. In an industry as complex and interconnected as ours, seeing beyond the immediate challenges to focus on long-term outcomes is vital. I approach leadership with the mindset that disruption is an opportunity. Change is not always comfortable, but stepping into discomfort often sparks the greatest innovation. The energy operators I’ve worked with are navigating immense challenges, from decarbonizing operations to setting a path to net zero by 2050. My role has been to inspire and empower them with clear priorities while providing the autonomy to execute effectively.

Ultimately, I believe the role of a leader is to help others be the best they can be. In my work, this means enabling teams and partners to think boldly and act decisively. Whether it’s mentoring a new generation of energy professionals or shaping commercial strategies that align profitability with sustainability, I aim to leave the industry better prepared to meet the dual challenges of economic growth and environmental stewardship.

The energy transition is a journey, and leadership is about ensuring that the journey is purposeful, inclusive, and forward-thinking. Together, we can drive change that not only addresses the challenges of today but also creates opportunities for the generations to come.
